Temporary residence cards in Vietnam

Review residence eligibility, sponsorship and supporting records for a Vietnam temporary residence card, coordinated with work or investment documents.

Discuss your requirements

Start with the residence basis and sponsor

Duong Tri Law helps foreign personnel, investors and eligible family members review the basis for a temporary residence card, the sponsoring party and the supporting documents. The review starts with the passport, current entry and residence position, expiry dates and the activity or relationship relied on.

A work permit, investment record or family relationship may support a residence application, but none should be treated as an automatic entitlement to a card. The applicant must fit an eligible category and satisfy the requirements for the actual case.

Review the appropriate application category

Employment-related residence

Check the work-authorisation evidence, employer or host, intended employment and the remaining validity of the supporting documents.

Investor residence

Review the investor’s capacity, company and investment records, qualifying category and evidence supporting the application.

Family-based residence

Assess the relationship, sponsor’s status and relevant civil-status records, including the formalities for documents issued overseas.

Other eligible categories

Professional or organisation-based cases need their own assessment of the category, invitation or sponsorship and supporting authorisations.

Check the dependencies before preparing forms

  • Passport validity and consistency of personal details across the file.
  • Current visa, entry and residence records, including any approaching expiry.
  • The proposed sponsor and evidence of its legal status or the family relationship.
  • Documents establishing the residence category and their remaining validity.
  • Temporary residence declaration and the relevant address information.
  • Changes of employer, passport, sponsor, investment position or purpose of stay.

If status has expired or the current circumstances do not match the intended route, identify that issue at the outset. Do not assume that filing a new application automatically resolves an existing residence issue.

Documents to prepare after the initial review

Application and passport

Prepare the prescribed application, passport and photographs required for the selected procedure. Confirm original-document handling before submission.

Sponsoring party

Provide the organisation’s or individual’s supporting records, authorisation and required registered information.

Category evidence

Work-authorisation, investment, family or other category-specific records must support the actual basis of residence.

Consistency and formalities

Check names, passport numbers, dates, translations, certification and legalisation requirements for foreign records.

From initial review to agreed next steps

  1. Review eligibility and timing

Identify the category, sponsor, current residence status and the documents that must be completed first.

  2. Prepare the application

Confirm the current forms and requirements, allocate client inputs and prepare the agreed records.

  3. Submit and follow up

Use the applicable receiving authority and submission channel; coordinate clarification requests within the agreed mandate.

  4. Check the result and hand over

Verify personal details, card category and validity. Explain the follow-up points and circumstances that call for a new review.

Validity, preparation time and costs

The requested term must be assessed against the residence category, passport and underlying evidence. Avoid planning travel or continued work on the assumption that the maximum term will be available.

Total preparation time includes any prerequisite work-authorisation, investment or family documents, foreign-document formalities and the application process. Official processing periods generally concern a complete qualifying file; they do not cover every preparation step.

The quotation should separate legal service fees, applicable official charges, translation, certification, legalisation and delivery costs. Current amounts and the submission channel are confirmed for the actual application.

Coordinate residence with work and investment

For foreign personnel, review the work permit or exemption position alongside residence. For investors, ensure the investment and company records support the actual activity and sponsor. Residence permission does not replace permission to work.

Questions before you proceed

Does a work permit guarantee a residence card?

No. The residence category, passport, sponsor, current status and remaining validity of supporting records must also be reviewed.

Can I keep using the same card after changing employer?

A change of employer or sponsor can affect the underlying basis. Review the work-authorisation and residence steps before relying on the existing card.

What if my passport or card is close to expiry?

Provide the expiry dates at the first review. Passport renewal or other prerequisite steps may affect the available route and timetable.

Can every case be completed entirely online?

Confirm the current channel and original-document requirements with the relevant procedure. Online submission should not be assumed to remove all physical-document requirements.

Legal framework and procedure references

The applicable provisions, receiving authority and document requirements must be checked for the facts and filing date of each case.
